Executive summary
This report is the second in the series describing a awareness level teacher-training program in Bajura district of Nepal by PHASE Austria and PHASE Nepal. The programme involved conducting 6 day in a different two phase for the primary teachers and in-school support given by the trainers throughout the year.
All the teachers of the Wai VDC schools were included in first
level teacher training at one venue, Swomi Kartik Higher Secondary School. The PHASE
Nepal trainer visit in school at least 2-3 times per year, where the classes
were observed and feedback given for the improvement.
In the teacher training, 53 teachers from 7 schools
attended. The themes of the workshops were group work, learning styles, child
psychology, team building, brain based learning, critical thinking, gender
right, techniques, approaches along with the materials preparation and use and
model lesson. Curriculum studies and the importance of teacher guide was also
the focus of training. The course had 3 days in the respective subjects so that
the in-depth study and interaction was effective. The necessary related
materials were using during the training, assessment and evaluation and making
of child centered learning materials was a main focus.
The training resulted in several
outcomes. Teachers shared their experiences during the year. They learnt new
understandings about child psychology, concept of brain based learning, three learning
styles, creative teaching, use to encourage to use of critical thinking part,
assessment and evaluation as well as developing new teaching skills.
The programme continues to
monitor the impact on student learning and changed teacher behavior in the
classroom through the post observation of
PHASE trainers’ field visit.
The PHASE Austria and city of
Vienna funds the teacher-training programme in five VDC of Bajura District and
the PHASE Nepal implements, monitors and supports.
The DEO Bajura and his staff continued to be
very positive and supportive for the programme. The cooperation between the PHASE
Austria, City of Vienna, District Education Office, Bajura. PHASE Nepal, and the teachers of Wai VDC’ s are
key factors for the accomplishment of this programme.

Workshop Programme
These two three days workshops had 53 teachers
attending. The workshop was conducted by the PHASE Nepal training team and the School
Supervisor of Bajura District.
The District Education Office and the head teachers
from the six host schools were very supportive.
The teacher’s expectations were identified and analyses before each training.

Activities:
Pre- Observation of Classroom (2015, November to 2015 December)
Each training started after we completed pre-
observation of each and every teacher in classroom, after that trainer success
to find need base, what is lacking part in the teaching learning activities,
and design the teacher training package on need based on their interest. The observation period is taken one month, we
had observed teaching learning pedagogy, technology, use of materials, and
students participate on the learning process, classroom management, lesion plan.

Teacher Training Programme. (2016, Janauary)
First day began with the introduction game and after
first day each training began with review of yesterday learning topics. New
games were incorporated into the program according to the timetable of each
topic. Participant representatives and facilitators conducted a daily
evaluation of sessions.
Participants prepared short
demonstration micro teaching lessons in groups. These lessons used skills
emphasized in the training such as TPS method, group work, questioning,
discussion and using teaching materials. Two teachers from each group were
randomly chosen to present the lesson. Other participants provided feedback
based on the model classroom teaching observation.

Post
Observation of Classroom:
While Phase Nepal
delivered teacher training program, after the training, trainer will give to regular
follow up program. At this program we visited each and every teacher’s
classroom for observing there teaching learning activities. At that time we
observe teaching learning activities, pedagogy, lesion plan, student’s
participation, group work, uses of teaching learning materials, Best teaching
practice. Also we have to observe how much different then pre- observation of
classroom, changing their teaching methodology and child centric environment
after the training.

Feedback for teacher after Post Observation .
When
we observe teaching classroom after that trainer and teacher had interaction
about the teaching classroom. Teacher shared their feeling to observer while
teaching at classroom, positive aspect
of their teaching and improvement part for the teaching. Similarly observer
also share the positive part and improvement part of the observation classroom.

After observation of the teacher’s classroom
PHASE Nepal has distributed the certificate. In the certificate there are
different levels of ranking. The teachers get their award level on the base of
their participation on the training, post observation of classroom and their
performance. They receive their certificate with the ranking.
Successes and Challenges of the previous trainings
Participants discussed
and recorded their successes and challenges in a variety of key areas what they
had learnt in the previous trainings.
Successes:
- Teachers are familiarized in using the teaching learning materials in the classrooms
- Students can use materials independently
- Group division and group works are encouraged in schools
- Games and songs for teaching has been entertaining in teaching
- Project works and preparation of teachers are another success of teachers
- Students feel encouraged and enjoy in the classroom
- Teacher responsibilities evenly distributed and Curriculum and books arrived on time
- Good cooperation between teaching staff and Good cooperation between school and community
- Students are sent to school regularly as the community involved in school development
- Teachers are habituated to use teachers guide, curriculum and learning achievement is focused while teaching.
Challenges:
- Unqualified teachers and lack of enough resources
- Lack of teachers in schools and language problems in village areas because of the multilingual culture.
- Parents are not fully aware of the importance of education
- Different levels of ability and age in one classroom and students not bringing books or pencil to school
- Noisy classrooms and the teachers not able to have group work as it is supposed to do.
- Difficulties of multi-grade teaching due to room size and lack of teachers’ motivation
Comments on teacher’s performance and their reactions
- Teachers enjoyed the teaching technique using the, classroom materials and participating the students more. Games and songs along with the activities are more powerful tools to make teaching learning activities lively and effective.
- The training was very valuable for us as we learned to use the collaborative approach, TPS method, types of questions.
- In training period they enjoyed model lesson of the trainers.
- The project work of science was acknowledged by the participants. .
- Teachers enjoyed having a big group of teachers from their VDCs and sharing of the experiences and skills.
- Teachers realised for this programme to be worthwhile they have to show changed behaviour in their classroom.
Recommendations
The Workshop agreed to recommend that:
- The training has been very effective and should continue for some more years.
- Schools should continue to be supplied with the required materials for teaching learning activities.
- DEO school supervisor recommended that the programme looks at in all areas has gone up in Bajura District.
- PHASE Nepal trainers have to visit schools more and support for effective teaching.
- Focal person in the DEO to be established and supported so as to coordinate the training and the impact of the programmers which acts as a bridge between PHASE Nepal and the District Education Office, Bajura.
